‚Bouquet Beneath the Waves‘ is a series of quilted tapestries exploring the relationship between form, color, and surface. Inspired by the image of a bouquet of flowers, the composition suggests movement reminiscent of water and waves, where floral shapes dissolve into flowing patterns. The work combines digitally printed blue and white tones on cotton, creating a visual dialogue between softness and precision. A contrasting bright orange stitch runs across the surface, highlighting the tactile nature of the textile and drawing attention to the rhythm and structure of the composition.
Produced during an art residency at Studio Kura and presented during the Itoshima Art Festival, the piece marks the realization of a project that has evolved over time through digital and material experimentation. The process of hand quilting with a sewing machine allowed for a slow and meditative engagement with the surface, where each line of stitching adds texture and dimensionality. ‚Bouquet Beneath the Waves‘ continues an ongoing investigation into textile-based expression, examining how printed imagery and manual craftsmanship intersect to form a unified visual and material language.
Accompanying ‚Bouquet Beneath the Waves I‘ is ‚Bouquet Beneath the Waves II‘ in its raw, unquilted form. Together, the two works offer a glimpse into different stages of the creative process - from the digitally printed fabric to the completed quilted tapestry - highlighting the transformation of material through time and technique.
Additionally I was interested introducing a performative element on how an artwork can change simply how it's being seen. With PVC strips suspended in front of the quilted tapestry, each step or breeze reframes it / transforming textiles and color into an ever moving encounter.
